YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SECTOR (YDS)

Youths form part of the most vulnerable groups in the society therefore greater attention should be paid to them. It is estimated that 55% of Sierra Leone’s Population are Youth. AMNet as a humanitarian organization is concerned about youth's issues. Therefore the youth enhancement sector main objectives are:

  • Advocate for the education of all youths and the protection of their rights
  • Promote life skills training and employment for youths especially girls
  • Gives psychosocial counselling on HIV/AIDS and Drug Abuse

HEAD OF UNIT STATEMENT
Due to the war, an estimated 700,000 of the displaced within Sierra Leone were children and youths (Sierra Leone National Youth Policy). Some 900 were either named orphaned or separated from their parents. A sizeable proportion of them were combatants who currently live/make a living on the streets

Majority of these youths who were forced to flee their communities trooped to Freetown, and other major cities like Bo, Kenema etc. They are largely literate, school drop-outs seeking a living from petty trading, narcotic drug peddling, prostitution and theft.

Based on these and other related problems, the Youth Development Sector advocates to reduce the number of marginal youth and to increase the number of mainstream youth (Sierra Leone National Youth Policy 2001).

ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN

  • Sensitization of HIV/AIDS and Drug Abuse in Schools, Vocational centres and Communities.
  • Free Public Counseling at our Office.
  • Late night Street Kids and Prostitute Hunting

CONCLUSION
In collaboration with Government line Ministries, National AIDS Secretariat (NAS) and other partners, we shall continue to advocate, develop and implement behavioural change communication projects in educational Institutions and the communities as a fast track process for the self realization of youths and their overall development as a strategy for coping with the economic, social and psychological changes.
