Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment Bill

The Bill shall address major challenges for gender equality in eight thematic areas. For example it will grant women 30% of all elective and appointive political positions, include affirmative action (scholarships for girls) in education, a ban of FGM performed on under-age girls, free health care for pregnant and lactating mothers and babies and equal land rights for men and women in Sierra Leone.

After a technical committee had developed core recommendations, these recommendations were discussed with Women's Rights Organizations and other stakeholders in the Southern and in the Eastern region of Sierra Leone. The Female Caucus of Parliament and its male allies advised on the further development of the bill. Once the consultations will have taken place in all regions, the recommendations will be translated into legal language by a bill draftsperson. The Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children's Affairs will then lay it at Cabinet for its subsequent tabling as a government bill in Parliament.
